Winter
Mulled Mead (serves many)
- Ingredients:
- ½ cup of Matawi Honey Gin (125ml)
- ½ cup Matawi Honey Liqueur (125ml)
- 330ml can Matawi Braggot
- Honey (to desired taste)
- 2 cardamom pods
- ½ tsp allspice
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 3 whole cloves
- 1 whole nutmeg, smashed with a hammer
- Half a thumb-sized piece of ginger
- 1 fresh orange rind
- Slices of lemon
- Rind of 1 orange and 1 lemon
- Preparation:
- Into a saucepan on medium heat, pour Matawi Honey Gin and Matawi Honey Liqueur, throwing in a cheesecloth sachet of whole spices and bring to a gentle boil for about 5mins to allow flavours to be released. To this mixture, add the can of Matawi Braggot and squeeze in the juice of the fresh orange before throwing-in the orange, a few slices of lemon, the grated rind and grated ginger into the mixture. Allow mixture to continue to infuse on medium heat for another 5mins. Add more honey if desired before pouring into drinking mugs and grating over fresh nutmeg to garnish before serving – enjoy!
Koffee Meadtail
- Ingredients:
- 1 shot glass of dark/Italian roast expresso (30ml)
- 1/2 shot glass of Matawi Honey Gin (15ml)
- Drizzle of Honey (to your desired sweetness)
- Dollop of whipped fresh cream (eyeball)
- Preparation:
- Prepare your expresso (place 1 heaped tablespoon (12-15g) of your preferred ground coffee into a cup. Pour over 1,5 shot glasses/45ml of boiling water and allow to steep for 1-2mins). Strain/press grounds and pour espresso into a small ceramic cup, drizzling in your desired honey and the Matawi Honey Gin. Top with whipped cream and enjoy!
Mead-mule
- Ingredients:
- 1 shot glass of Matawi Honey Gin
- 1-2 teaspoons freshly squeezed lemon juice
- 1,5 shot glasses of Ginger Beer
- Lemon peel
- Preparation:
- In a cocktail shaker with cracked ice, vigorously shake Matawi Honey Gin and lemon juice together. Run the exterior of the lemon peel around the rim of a chilled old-fashioned glass to release lemon oil. Pour cocktail into the glass, top with ginger beer and drop in the lemon peel – enjoy!
Naartjie Gimlet
- Ingredients:
- ½ shot glass of Matawi Honey Gin (15ml)
- ½ shot glass Matawi Citrus Mead Mixer (15ml)
- ½ shot glass freshly squeezed nartjie juice (15ml)
- ½ shot glass fresh grapefruit (15ml)
- ½ shot glass soda water (15ml)
- Sprig fresh rosemary
- Drizzle of honey (to your preferred taste)
- Preparation:
- In a cocktail shaker with cracked ice, vigorously shake all ingredients (bruise fresh rosemary before adding). Allow to stand for 2mins for flavours to infuse well. Strain cocktail into a chilled champagne flute – enjoy!
Mead Michelada
- Ingredients:
- 330ml can Matawi Braggot, chilled
- Pinch of salt & pepper
- Pinch cayenne pepper
- Lemon/lime wedge
- ½ shot glass freshly squeezed lemon juice (15ml)
- Dash of Worcestershire sauce
- Dash Tobasco sauce
- Preparation:
- Rub the rime of a beer glass with lemon/lime juice and coat with a mix of salt-cayenne. To the glass add the freshly squeezed lemon juice, Worcestershire and Tobasco sauce, pepper before adding the chilled Matawi Braggot – enjoy!
